Last weekend my lover and I went to Mebane, NC to spend time with a few people we will miss greatly when we move. It was a weekend filled with laughter, good drinks, italian espresso, Rummikub, homemade brisket, cornbread soufflé, encouragement, sunshine, tan lines, and rest.
Rest comes in many forms. This weekend it looked like sleeping until the clock read 10am. It looked like a makeshift badminton court on the green, warm side lawn with flip-flops as the line markers. It looked like monkey bread and fresh juice. It looked like talking about ways we want to grow and things we've left behind.
Rest is so important. I won't ramble about the physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental benefits of rest, but you should look them up. After such a beautiful weekend, I expected this week to be a little less stressful. Of course, this is not how life progresses. After a night of sleepless tossing and turning, I finally got up at 6:30 this morning to do a slow, easy, hour and a half yoga routine. It was the perfect way for my body to wake up and my mind to rest, working through the nuances of the daily schedule that I had mapped out last night.
Rest is important. Sometimes it looks like 5 minutes, locked in your bedroom closet, closing your eyes and breathing deeply. Sometimes it looks like a 30 minute nap, or a 15 minute coffee or tea break. Sometimes it looks like an early morning yoga session while the house is dark and silent.
Last weekend we were able to rest. We are so thankful for the friends who provided this sanctuary for us before we continue on to the last 9 weeks of our journey toward Amsterdam. Below are a few pictures of our breakfast on our final morning together.
Whatever you have to do, try and find time to rest today.
